AO3 is for publishing, not backups

AO3 is a great platform but it's not a drafting tool, and not a safe place to store your only copy of a WIP. The site has gone down multiple times recently, including a major multi-day outage in March 2026 where AO3 themselves told users to "make sure you have a backup of any text you are attempting to post."

So it’s probably best to follow their advice, but if you’re looking for a safe writing app to save your fics’ drafts Google Docs might not be the way to go…
